9 Crypto Checkout Tips to Boost Your Payment Conversion Rate

A customer who wants to pay in crypto makes a decision on the very first screen after the cart: continue, or give up. That makes your crypto checkout one of the biggest levers on your conversion rate. Here are nine practical tips for getting the most out of MercanPay's hosted payment page.

What is a hosted crypto checkout?

A hosted checkout is a ready-made payment page served by the payment gateway. When you create an invoice in the MercanPay panel or through the API, you get a payment_url. Send the customer there and they'll see:

  • A QR code to scan with a wallet app
  • A copyable payment address and the amount
  • A countdown showing how long the invoice stays open
  • A TRX / USDT choice on USD-priced invoices
  • Turkish and English language support

As soon as the transfer appears on-chain, the page switches to "payment detected · confirming". After 20 block confirmations, usually about a minute, the payment is final. Using this page instead of building your own saves development time and keeps the sensitive parts in hardened code.

9 tips to improve crypto checkout conversion

1. Price in USD and let the customer pick the coin

Some customers hold USDT, others hold TRX. Pricing in USD and letting the customer choose the coin cuts the "I don't have that coin" drop-off. On USD-priced invoices the rate is locked once the customer picks a coin, which also protects you from volatility. See crypto payment exchange rate risk.

$invoice = $zp->createUsdInvoice('49.00', [
    'order_id'    => 'order-2045',
    'description' => 'Pro Plan - 12-month license',
    'tokens'      => ['USDT', 'TRX'],
    'success_url' => 'https://yourstore.com/order/2045/thanks',
    'return_url'  => 'https://yourstore.com/cart',
]);
header('Location: ' . $invoice['payment_url']);

2. Write a descriptive product description

The description field is shown on the payment page. "Pro Plan - 12-month license" reassures the customer far more than "Order #2045". Crypto transfers are irreversible, so that sense of being in the right place matters a lot.

3. Tell customers which network to use: TRC20

One of the most common crypto payment problems is a customer picking the wrong network when withdrawing from an exchange. Add a short note next to your pay button or on the cart page: "When withdrawing from your exchange, choose TRON (TRC20) as the network." That single sentence can noticeably cut support tickets and lost payments. We explain why in crypto sent to the wrong network.

4. Show one clear final amount

On MercanPay, network fees are already included in the amount on the payment page, which simply says "network fees included". The customer sees one final total, with no extra line at the last step. Surprise-free pricing reduces cart abandonment.

If the customer pays from an exchange, also remind them that the exchange charges its own withdrawal fee, and that the amount that arrives needs to match the invoice. Otherwise you'll see underpayments.

5. Set a sensible expiry

Invoices stay open for at most 24 hours. expires_in_minutes accepts values from 5 to 1440. A short window suits customers who pay on the spot, but someone who first needs to fund an exchange and buy USDT needs longer. Pick a window that fits your audience. Payments that arrive after expiry are still credited to your balance, so a late customer's money isn't lost.

6. Always set success_url and return_url

  • success_url: once the payment is complete, the customer's browser goes here within a few seconds, with invoice_id, order_id and status appended. A thank-you page with "we're preparing your order" puts customers at ease.
  • return_url: the "Back to store" button on the payment page. If the customer gives up or the invoice expires, they can get back to their cart easily.

One important caveat: success_url is for user experience only. Always fulfil orders from the signed webhook, because a browser redirect can be faked. See verifying webhook signatures.

7. Avoid duplicate invoices

A customer who hits back and clicks "Pay" again shouldn't get a fresh invoice. Give every order a unique order_id. A request with the same order_id returns the existing invoice instead of creating a new one, so the customer always lands on the same payment page.

8. Plan for underpayments

Exchange fees or rounding sometimes mean a customer sends slightly less than asked. On MercanPay the invoice then moves to partial, the payment page shows the remainder, and the invoice gets at least 30 more minutes. You can also set an underpayment tolerance of 0–20% in the panel so tiny shortfalls don't hold up an order. More in underpayments, overpayments and late payments.

9. Give customers a mini "how to pay" guide

For customers new to crypto, a three-step guide next to your checkout helps:

  1. Open your wallet or exchange app.
  2. Scan the QR code or copy the address, and choose TRON (TRC20) as the network.
  3. Send the exact amount and wait for "payment detected" on the page.

For customers sending USDT from a personal wallet, add that the wallet needs a little TRX for the transaction fee. We explain why in TRON energy and bandwidth explained.
